Sloan didn’t want to leave. She wanted to take off all her clothes and crawl back into bed and press her naked body against Adrienne. Adrienne would be warm, soft, and inviting. Even when sleeping, Adrienne would mold her body into hers, snuggling up to Sloan during the night. They fit together perfectly, like God or someone had intended.

Sloan stood at the foot of the bed watching the steady rise and fall of Adrienne’s breathing. She wanted to feel Adrienne’s warm breath on her skin, inhale her life-affirming air as they kissed, touch her skin as she explored her body as if for the first time. Her fingers itched as she remembered the secret places of Adrienne’s desire, the ones that made her tremble and beg for release. She needed to feel Adrienne’s body respond, hear Adrienne call her name when she came.

But this wasn’t about what she wanted or needed. It was what she had to do. She had to leave. They’d said their good-byes last night. Actually they’d said their good-byes every night for the past few weeks. They both knew this day was coming, and by tacit mutual agreement, both of them knew their time together would end. Sloan was going to law school in California, and Adrienne was flying to Italy in three days. They were going their separate ways, both of them mature enough to realize that a long-distance relationship was just not in their deck of cards. After one last light kiss on Adrienne’s cheek, Sloan quietly closed the door behind her.

It was a moonless night, and Sloan’s feet dragged as she walked the thirty yards to where her car was parked. It was such an effort she could have sworn she was slogging through mud up to her knees. With every step her heart cracked open a little wider, and she forced herself not to look back. Her life was moving forward, and with it came commitments she could not renege on; it was far too late to turn back now.

The familiar beep of the alarm and unlocking of the two doors made it all real. She was leaving Adrienne’s bed for the last time. Her car would never again be parked in the space next to Adrienne’s red Toyota. Sloan closed the door and let her head fall back, closing her eyes. She didn’t want to see the stairs leading up to Adrienne’s door for fear she’d climb them and never come back down.

Taking a deep breath, Sloan turned the key, and the powerful engine roared to life. She had to use her side mirrors to back out, as her rear window was blocked by what she’d packed for the next chapter in her life. What couldn’t fit had been shipped to her new apartment and would arrive the day after she did, but first Sloan had to manage a three-day drive across the country.

The first day Sloan didn’t even try to stanch the tears that flowed freely down her cheeks. The second, she alternated between sniffles and downright sobs.
